JOSEPH SUTTON of MORETON

  • 1811 - 1873

Joseph Sutton of Moreton was christened on 10 November 1811 in St. Oswald Parish Church, Bidston, the second child of John and Elizabeth. He married Emma Potter daughter of Thomas Clark, on the 4 November 1855 in Our Lady and St. Nicholas Parish Church, Liverpool. Emma was born 1817 in Preston Lancashire and was a widow when she married Joseph.

Joseph, along with his brother John, was a witness to the marriage of his younger sister Margaret to James Stanley on 11 April 1839 at St Oswalds where his occupation is given as 'Farrier'

The 1841 census lists Josep (sic) as an Ag Lab on the farm of Peter Slater in Morton HO107/126/3 P1

In 1851, Joseph is recorded as farmer of 16 acres on Fender Farm, Fender Lane, Moreton, employing his brother-in-law William Hazlehurst as an Ag Lab. William married Sarah Sutton one of his twin sisters born in 1824. William and Sarah had 3 children, Mary, John and Joseph.

In 1861 Joseph is listed as a farmer of just 4 acres. By this point in time Joseph and Emma had 3 children:

  • Joseph Sutton b. 1856, Wallasey d. 6 December 1881.
  • John James Sutton, b. 1858, Wallasey; d. 15 December 1890, buried Bidston Parish Church.
  • Elizabeth M Sutton, b. 1861, Moreton who married her cousin William Sutton b. 1858.
Also living on the farm were the children from Emma's first marriage, Martha, Thomas, Emma, John, Fredrick (gson)

The 1871 census again lists Joseph as living on Fender Farm on Reeds Lane. On this occasion her is listed as farming 140 acres and employing 4 ag labs. So either Joseph fell on hard times circa '51 or there has been a miss recording. Although Joseph dies in 1875, Emma continues managing the farm and is listed as having 80 acres employing 2 ag lab's in 1881.

Joseph dies in April 1875 at Fender Farm and is buried on the 26th of the month, his final resting place being the church of his christening. Emma dies in May 1881 and is buried alongside her second husband.
